Leading String Innovator Ashaway Named Official String of Professional Tennis Registry

-- With more technical "Firsts" than any other manufacturer, Ashaway is only US string maker
-- Company will support PTR mission to educate, certify and service tennis teachers and coaches worldwide

Ashaway, RI -- Longtime string innovator Ashaway Racket Strings has been named the Official String of Professional Tennis Registry (PTR), the company recently announced. The designation is part of a three-year sponsorship agreement with PTR, effective January 1, 2014.

PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 14,600 members in 117 countries. It has the greatest percentage of multicultural and women members of any such organization. PTR is dedicated to educating, certifying and servicing tennis teachers and coaches around the world in order to grow the game.

"PTR is excited to sign with Ashaway. The company produces high quality racket strings, and has been a long-term supporter of the industry," said Dan Santorum, PTR CEO. "In keeping with PTR's emphasis on our family culture, it is apropos that we partner with a great family owned and run company like Ashaway."

"Ashaway is delighted to partner with Professional Tennis Registry and its worldwide membership," said Steve Crandall, Ashaway Vice President. "Ashaway has been a leading innovator in the tennis industry since 1949, and as PTR's Official String, we're happy to support its mission to educate, certify and service tennis teachers and coaches around the world, and to help grow the game of tennis."

Long recognized for its technical expertise and innovation in the racket string industry, Ashaway claims more technical "Firsts" that any other string maker. The company introduced the first successful alternative to natural gut in 1949, a synthetic multifilament tennis string made from nylon fibers which was marketed widely throughout the '50s and '60s under the Vantage® brand.

In the '70s Ashaway produced the first Kevlar® tennis strings, the same fibers used in bulletproof vests. Kevlar strings were used as very durable main strings in the first ever tennis string hybrid combination, Crossfire®. In the '80s and '90s Ashaway also produced the first multifilament tennis strings manufactured from Zyex® fibers, marketed under the Composite® and Dynamite® trade names.

Now in the 21st century, Ashaway has introduced the first 100% Zyex monofilament strings under the MonoGut® ZX brand. These revolutionary monofilament strings play more like natural gut than any other string and will be incorporated into new Crossfire hybrid products in 2014.

Ashaway Racket Strings are made by Ashaway Line & Twine Mfg. Co., the only U.S. manufacturer of string for squash, tennis, racquetball, and badminton. Operated by the Crandall family since 1824, Ashaway has been making racket strings since 1949, and is responsible for several important technical innovations. Ashaway has been the Official String of USA Racquetball for more than ten years and has recently been named the Official String of Professional Tennis Registry. Ashaway Line & Twine Mfg. Co. also makes braided products for medical and industrial applications. For more information visit www.ashawayusa.com.
